Professor Catherine Reenaers
Professor Catherine Reenaers is a senior gastroenterologist at the University Hospital of Liège, Belgium. She completed her specialist training at the same institution and served as a Research Assistant and Research Fellow of the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) from 2004 to 2011.
Following her PhD, Professor Reenaers focused her research on the role of fibrosis in Crohn's disease. She subsequently worked as a Senior Clinical and Research Fellow with Simon Travis at the John Radcliffe Hospital. She then returned to Liège, where she holds a permanent position as an IBD specialist, working closely with Edouard Louis.
Professor Reenaers is a full professor at the University of Liège, where she is actively involved in teaching. She is engaged in several scientific societies and currently serves as Head of the Scientific Committee of BIRD, as well as a member of the Scientific Committee of GETAID. She was the national representative for ECCO from 2012 to 2020.
She is also actively involved in intestinal ultrasound, having trained at San Raffaele Hospital and obtained her IBUS certification in 2024. Her research interests include perianal Crohn's disease, with publications addressing topics such as mesenchymal stem cells and contributions to ECCO guidelines.
Professor Reenaers has received several scientific awards at Belgian and European conferences and has delivered numerous invited lectures internationally. She has authored or co-authored more than 115 peer-reviewed publications in international journals.
Dr Baddr Shakhsheer, MD, FACS, FAAP
Dr Baddr Shakhsheer is a paediatric surgeon at the University of Chicago. Dr. Shakhsheer’s clinical interests lie in the surgical care of children, especially those with IBD. He specializes in the application of minimally invasive techniques to paediatric patients.
